IoT products are chic, expensive, practical and often end up as useless bricks after a few years, as manufacturers discontinue software support for products. This poor environmental performance is made worse by the fact that many IoT products have limited or no repair capabilities. Devices with disposable batteries and accumulators, such as city scooters, are often not disposed of properly , but meet their end dumped in the Rhine and Spree rivers. The Internet of Things is about connecting things: sensors, fridges, robots and cars. The growth in numbers of the IoT devices is driven on one hand by the reduction of cost for simple connectivity, but also by the increase in needs for flexibility and by more powerful wireless connectivity.
In the first direction the cost of classic M2M connectivity has long been slowing down the IoT market, but some technologies with very low battery consumption, long term market stability and prices of 10 Euros for 10 years finally emerge as solutions that allow also “non-important” sensors and devices to become part of the internet of everything and to do more IoT.
In the other direction, 5G allows a reliability and latency that enables machines and data to become wireless that was previously bound to stay cabled. 5G networks in their different flavours represents the other extreme of IoT connectivity that is also growing strongly and seeing an increase in factory flexibility and cloud deployments fulfilling the needs of market and technology for new IoT.
IoT is expanding in all directions: cheaper, simpler, greener as well as stronger, “own-er” and faster.

Big data and artificial intelligence have enabled numerous applications for humanitarian and social good. In terms of climate change, machine learning, deep learning, and computer vision approaches have proven to be useful for adaptation and mitigation. We’ll highlight nine major areas in which artificial intelligence is key in the fight against this crisis: electricity systems, transportation, buildings and cities, industry, farms and forests, carbon dioxide removal, climate prediction, societal impacts, solar geoengineering. From harnessing deep learning-based computer vision techniques for infrastructure damage assessment after natural disasters using satellite imagery, to utilizing natural language processing technologies to analyze climate-related legislation, we contend that AI is a necessary tool in years ahead. At the same time, sustainable and responsible use of deep learning models is key. Particularly, the notably large energy consumption of AI systems themselves have come under scrutiny; especially with the recent popularity of deep learning (DL) since approximately 2012, high-level computations have raised the overall energy consumption by 300,000 times or more. Balancing this concern, in addition to other considerations like model interpretability, accessibility, and fairness, are crucial challenges to tackle ahead.

Despite the wealth of information available to job seekers, choosing careers and transitioning
between jobs remain somewhat random. With thousands of job titles available, it is difficult
for candidates to know what each role entitles and how well-suited they are for various
positions.

Our research aims to break though this complexity and identify the most fitting careers for
every job. To this end, we combine an exhaustive occupational dataset with multivariate
matching algorithms. These algorithms account for the semantic similarity between job
descriptions and for the overlap in the skills required by different jobs.

We find that a significant number of careers lie outside the field in which candidates currently
operate. Furthermore, we define a degree of specialization and use this to quantify the
number of paths open to every job. Finally, we cluster jobs and skills to reduce career map
complexity and obtain several insights related to career progression.
